On February 10th, Trump announced that he would impose a 25% tariff on all aluminum products imported into the United States. This policy did not increase the original tariff rate, but treated all countries equally, including China’s competitors. Surprisingly, this indiscriminate tariff policy has actually “enhanced” the competitiveness of Chinese aluminum exports directly to the United States.
Looking back at history, the United States has imposed punitive tariffs on Chinese aluminum products, resulting in a significant reduction in the direct export of Chinese aluminum to the United States. However, this new tariff policy has made Chinese aluminum products face the same tariff conditions as other countries when exporting to the United States, providing new opportunities for the export of Chinese aluminum materials.
At the same time, major aluminum importing countries in the United States, such as Canada and Mexico, will be greatly impacted by this tariff policy. This may indirectly affect the indirect export channels through which Chinese aluminum materials flow to the United States. However, from an overall trend perspective, despite facing various high tariffs, the export of Chinese aluminum materials and aluminum products still shows a growth trend due to insufficient overseas supply and the expansion of export channels.
Therefore, this tariff policy may have a certain positive impact on China’s aluminum prices. Under the promotion of tariff policies, the export competitiveness of Chinese aluminum materials is expected to be further enhanced, thereby bringing new development opportunities for the Chinese aluminum industry.
