The U. S. Aluminum Tank Recovery Rate Rose Slightly to 43 percent

According to data released by the Aluminum Association (AA) and the Tanning Association (CMI). Us aluminum beverage cans recovered slightly from 41.8% in 2022 to 43% in 2023. Slightly higher than in the previous three years, but below the 30-year average of 52%.

Although aluminum packaging represents only 3% of household recyclable materials by weight, it contributes nearly 30% of its economic value. Industry leaders attribute the stagnant recovery rates to trade dynamics and outdated recycling systems. CMI Chairman Robert Budway said in the same statement on December 5, “More coordinated action and increased long-term strategic investments are needed to improve the recovery rate of aluminum beverage cans. Certain policy measures, such as the comprehensive extended Producer Responsibility Act, which includes the recovery of refunds (deposit return systems), will greatly improve the recovery rate of beverage containers.”

In 2023, the industry recovered 46 billion cans, maintaining a high closed-loop cycle rate of 96.7%. However, the average recycling content in US-made aluminum tanks has dropped to 71%, highlighting the need for better recycling infrastructure and consumer engagement.
