The Recycling Materials Association (ReMA) in the United States stated that after reviewing and analyzing the executive order on imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to the US, it has concluded that scrap iron and scrap aluminum can continue to be traded freely at the US border.
ReMA International Trade and Global Affairs Officer Adam Shaffer said: ” After a careful analysis of the full presidential statement on restoring Article 232 on steel and aluminum imports, imports of recycled steel and aluminum are still not subject to these specific tariffs.”
Shaffer added, “Scrap materials have been excluded from these tariffs since 2017 and 2018, and will continue to be outside the scope of these tariffs in the future.”
However, he pointed out that the increase in the aluminum tariff from 10% to 25% will take effect on March 12th and will affect imports from all countries, including Canada and Mexico. ReMA continues to monitor the potential impact of the proposed reciprocal tariffs on the trade of recycled materials and is seeking the best ways to cooperate with the new government to reduce such impacts.
