According to foreign media reports, Novelis plans to close its aluminum manufacturing plant in Chesterfield County, Richmond, Virginia on May 30.
A company spokesperson said that this move is part of the company’s restructuring. Novelis said in a prepared statement, “Novelis is integrating its US operations and has made the difficult decision to close its Richmond operations.” Seventy – three workers will be laid off after the closure of the Chesterfield plant, but these workers may be hired by other Novelis plants in North America. The Chesterfield plant mainly produces aluminum – rolled sheets for the construction industry.
Novelis will permanently close its Fairmont plant in West Virginia on June 30, 2025, which is expected to affect about 185 employees. The plant mainly produces a variety of aluminum products for the automotive and heating and cooling industries. The reasons for the closure of the plant are high maintenance costs on the one hand and the tariff policies implemented by the Trump administration on the other hand.
